Turning “I hate myself” into “I love myself”- Tips to improving self image and confidence

Something that I’ve loved promoting over the past couple months is self love and I thought I’d put together some tips on how to improve your own self image and confidence. How many of you have said to yourself or someone else “I hate myself?” that isn’t the attitude you should have about yourself and it isn’t going to pursue happiness so why don’t we all go on a journey from hating yourself to telling yourself and others that you love yourself. I have done quite a bit of research into this and I have asked for your participation into giving me some tips on how you improve your self image and confidence so thank you so much to everyone who helped bring this post to life.

On a poll on Instagram, I asked my followers whether or not they suffer from a low self esteem, personally, I can definitely answer yes but there are many things that have helped to minimise that self hate, according to the poll 93% of individuals who participated said that they have a low self esteem, only 50 individuals participated in that poll but 93% of those 50 individuals so imagine how many people in this world in total suffer from a low self esteem so I decided to do some further research for this post and according to research, 61% of 10 to 17 years old suffer with a low self-esteem and confidence issues.

I wrote a blog post a few months ago about my opinions on growing to loving yourself  and I wanted to promote some tips with helping, I didn’t really go into much detail which is why I’ve decided to conjoin these two posts. If you want to have a read of my other post, A Journey to Accepting and Growing to Love Myself (Eating Disorder Story) ,also if you’re interested, I wrote a whole post on my own opinions on how social media has an impact on an individuals self esteem so here’s the link to that, What impact social media is having on mental health and body image. So, now I’ve given you a bit of background, I’m now going to get started on giving you the tips I’ve been using and have been proving effective.

Tip no. 1

Do something that makes you happy- Do you have a favourite singer? An individual on instagram says she listens to empowering music from artists such as Demi Lovato and Little Mix, another individual says she puts on some makeup and a really nice outfit and receiving complements helps her also so do just those. In my instance, I like to have a good pamper, I will do a face mask, watch a girly movie and have some time to myself, this is perfect because your taking time for yourself and re-evaluating what you don’t love about yourself etc. Sometimes taking time to re-evaluate yourself and thinking about what changes you’d like to make to yourself and to your life can really help you in your journey to loving yourself. Just because something made you happy doesn’t mean it will pursue you happiness forever so getting rid of those things can help you to develop yourself.

Tip no. 2

Do something new- Maybe you’ve been wanting to do something for a while, get a new job or travel to somewhere on your bucket list. Have a break from the things that drain you and don’t make you happy, that could be your current job, if your able to, quit that job and pursue for your dream job, you weren’t put on this world to be unhappy, live your life the way that will make you happy when it’s too late. Also remember to take a break, take a few days away from everything that is making you unhappy and go on a small trip, this can give you the motivation to look after yourself, maybe you could travel somewhere that has been on your bucket list for a while? maybe it could be the break you need.

Tip no. 3

Take time out for yourself- The world can become quite hectic at times so it is definitely important to take some time out for yourself, maybe have a pamper evening, take care of your skin by using a face mask and use a cleaner, use that hair mask you’ve been wanting to use for a while and have a nice relaxing bath for the first time in as long as you can remember. Taking time out of the world can give you a whole different perspective on the world and can help you to feel refreshed and ready to tackle to world once again, Alternatively. you could go to the gym, this is the place I go to when I want to have some time to myself and slowly improve myself both physically and mentally, sometimes having a good gym session can make you feel 100 x better.

Top no. 4

Spend time with the people you love/make you happy- Sometimes when it come’s to self love is finding the reasons other people love you, one person on my Instagram said that knowing their boyfriend loves them makes them happier and boosts their self esteem. Sometimes when I’m feeling really crappy about myself I love to spend time with my boyfriend and my friends, they always make me feel so much better and receiving compliments may be the motivation you need to love yourself. Since I live at university, I like to take some time to visit home and that definitely refreshes my mind and perspective on why I go to university etc and others around me love me so why don’t I love myself.

Tip no. 5

Forgive yourself for your past- Everyone experiences emotion differently and if your anything like me, I let my past define me and I let it get the better of me but something I did a couple months ago was forgive myself for any guilt I had in my mind for anything bad that happened in the past. Sometimes past mistakes can drag you down and stop yourself from being truly happy but if you begin to let them go, you will definitely see a massive improvement on your happiness and your self gratitude to yourself. Everyone has scars but let them show strength and remember you got through them so let that empower you to love yourself and develop yourself into the self you will love.

These are my top 5 tips for turning that I hate myself into I love myself, the journey to loving yourself is a long process but when you finally do, you will express true happiness and will in turn be able to fully love someone else. I hope this post helped, remember each and every one of you is important and there is no reason you shouldn’t love yourself. Thank you so much for reading, let me know in the comments which tip you are going to start incorporating into your everyday lifestyle, until next time, Chlo x

  1. This is such a helpful post – I know I do a lot of these already, but I am definitely going to work on forgiving myself! I always find that listening to music really helps me – music has always been one of my ‘things’. I have my self-care playlist on spotify that I put on whenever I feel a bit sad.

  2. This is really important. Looking after yourself and your own well-being should be a top priority. I’m not at the ‘loving myself’ stage yet, this post will really help me and I’m sure a lot of others! Great post x
